Function Gap junction protein that acts as a regulator of bladder capacity. A gap junction consists of a cluster of closely packed pairs of transmembrane channels, the connexons, through which materials of low MW diffuse from one cell to a neighboring cell. Negative regulator of bladder functional capacity: acts by enhancing intercellular electrical and chemical transmission, thus sensitizing bladder muscles to cholinergic neural stimuli and causing them to contract (By similarity). {ECO:0000250}.
Subcellular Location Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Cell junction, gap junction.
Top Pathways Gap junction, Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC)

Immunocytochemistry/Immunofluorescence analysis of normoxic (A) and hypoxic (B) human mesenchymal stem cells labelling Connexin 43 / GJA1 with ab11369. Blue = DAPI (scale bars = 50 μm). Cells were grown on glass coverslips in 12-well tissue-culture dishes. Coverslips were washed with DPBS and fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde for 15 min, blocked, and incubated with the primary antibody for 1 hour at 37°C. Cells were washed and incubated with FITC-conjugated secondary antibody for 1 hour at 37°C.
