Function |
ALDHs play a major role in the detoxification of alcohol-derived acetaldehyde. They are involved in the metabolism of corticosteroids, biogenic amines, neurotransmitters, and lipid peroxidation. This protein preferentially oxidizes aromatic aldehyde substrates. It may play a role in the oxidation of toxic aldehydes and in preventing corneal damage caused by ultraviolet light. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10376761, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11784860}.
|
Subcellular Location |
Cytoplasm.
|
Tissue Specificity |
Constitutively expressed in cornea, stomach, skin, bladder and lungs. Lowest expression levels in lungs and bladder. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10376761}.
